Iconic London Locations for Photography
Whether you’re visiting the city for the first time or you’ve called it home for years, London is packed with incredible photo opportunities. I’ve lived in London for decades now, and there’s always a few top spots I just love for London locations for photography. From world-famous landmarks to quiet hidden corners, there’s something for every kind of shoot, whether it’s a family photoshoot, a romantic couples session, or vacation photography to remember your trip.
Here are some of my favourite London locations for photography, all right in the heart of the city.
1. Houses of Parliament, Big Ben & The London Eye
For instantly recognisable London views, this area is a winner. You have Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye all within a few steps, with the River Thames sparkling beside you. I love photographing couples or families here, with the historic beauty of Westminster on one side and the modern charm of the Eye on the other. It’s a wonderful place for relaxed portraits especially early in the morning before the crowds arrive. My family clients love it for the open space and skyline views, while couples can enjoy a stroll along the river for naturally romantic shots.
2. Southbank & Riverside Walk
Few places capture the energy of London quite like Southbank. Full of creativity and colour, the Southbank and Riverside Walk is ideal if you want photos with a little more personality. From the bright yellow Hayward Gallery to bustling book stalls and riverside cafés, not to mention the iconic London buildings along the way. You can walk all the way to London Bridge and Borough Market, taking in both modern and historic parts of London.
It’s a vibrant setting for fun, candid photos. It’s one of my favourite London photography locations for families and couples who want a laid-back, city vibe in their gallery.
3. St Paul’s Cathedral & Millennium Bridge
If you’re after a mix of iconic London architecture and stunning views, St Paul’s Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge are perfect. The bridge lines up beautifully with St Paul’s dome in the background, an instantly recognisable shot. The surrounding streets offer quieter, more intimate backdrops too, ideal for couple portraits or family walks through the city. It can get busy so morning time is best for areas like this.
4. Tower Bridge
This spot is up there with Big Ben as one of the most recognisable London places. Like many other popular places it can get busy, but with an early start and a little knowledge of the right places you can get amazing photos by and on Tower Bridge. And as an added bonus there is Shad Thames on one side of the river. This is an area of Victorian warehouse buildings and cobbled that takes you back to Dickensian times. On the other side of the river there’s the Tower of London. All in all a wonderfully historic area.
5. St Dunstans in the East
Tucked away near the Tower of London, St Dunstans in the East feels like a secret garden in the middle of the city. With ivy-covered ruins, stone archways and dappled light filtering through the trees, it’s one of the most magical London locations for photography. It’s particularly lovely for couples or families who want something more peaceful and atmospheric.
6. Buckingham Palace & St James’s Park
If you want a touch of royal London, Buckingham Palace and St James’s Park never disappoint. You can get those grand, iconic shots by the Palace, then wander into the park for soft, natural portraits among the trees and lakes. It’s a wonderful mix of elegance and greenery, perfect for families or travellers wanting classic London memories.
7. Regent’s Park
Regents Park is one of my favourite parks in London. Not only is the park itself beautiful, especially Queen Marys Garden and the inner park, but its surrounded by gorgeous Georgian town houses. A perfect place for photos capturing both elegant architecture and green space.
8. Greenwich
Greenwich is a little further down the river but it’s an amazing area full of fabulous places to visit and a brilliant mix of locations for photos. Possibly most well known for being the home of time, where the East and West hemispheres meet and you can stand on the meridian line. The park itself is really lovely, with open spaces as well as a flower garden. At the top of Greenwich Park there are stunning views towards Canary Wharf. By the river there are a number of fabulous historic buildings such as Queens House, The Old Royal Naval College and Cutty Sark. In the middle of it all there is the covered market, with cobbled paths and unique little shops. If you want an area that offers a bit of everything, and says ‘London’ in a different way, Greenwich is a great option.
Tips for Planning Your London Photoshoot
- Go early or midweek for softer light and fewer crowds.
- Mix locations for variety as landmarks and quiet corners work beautifully together.
- Bring comfortable shoes because we’ll walk between spots, and that’s part of the fun!
