My 8 favourite locations for Surrey family photography
When it comes to planning a relaxed, natural family photoshoot, location makes all the difference. Surrey and the surrounding areas are home to some of the most beautiful places, perfect for letting little ones run free while we capture those genuine, joy-filled moments.
Over the years, I’ve discovered a handful of locations that work beautifully for family photography. These spots offer stunning backdrops, soft natural light, and plenty of space for children to be themselves, resulting in timeless, fun filled images.
Here are my 8 favourite locations for Surrey family photography.
1. Mayfield Lavender
I couldn’t possibly have a “top locations for Surrey family photography” without mentioning Mayfield Lavender. It’s an organic lavender farm near Banstead in Surrey. It’s gorgeous for a family photography session, and you can buy experiences like Pimms and a picnic, or go on a tractor ride for extra fun!
2. Coworth Park
Coworth Park is a gorgeous 5-star luxury hotel near Virginia Water in Surrey. With landscaped gardens, rolling fields and gorgeous views, it’s particularly lovely for spotting wildlife. There is also a stunning wild flower meadow that’s in bloom in Summer. Why not indulge yourselves with a lovely afternoon tea afterwards?
3. Winkworth Arboretum
I love the history of this place. It was started just before World War II and has been a massive conservation project now owned by the National Trust. The chap who started it all roped in his family members to help instead of hiring employees so the family bond is instilled in every tree planted there! You can even bring your dog on the session provided they’re on a lead. If you’re drawn to rich seasonal colour this place is a must. It’s particularly stunning in autumn, when the landscape transforms into warm reds, oranges, and golds reflected in the lakes.
4. Nonsuch Park
Nonsuch Park is near Epsom in Surrey and has wonderful history dating back to Henry VIII who commissioned the building of the Palace there but it was unfinished by the time he died and then it was passed to Elizabeth I until Charles II gave it to his mistress who demolished the palace and broke up the parks to pay off her gambling debts. Very little of the palace can be seen today, but the park is a beautiful place for a walk and perfect for a Surrey family photography session.
5. Box Hill
Box Hill is based in the Surrey Hills and it’s another National Trust conservation site, and another stunner of a location. perfect for families who love a bit of adventure and breathtaking scenery. With its sweeping views over the Surrey Hills and iconic stepping stones across the River Mole, it offers a more dramatic backdrop than many other locations. It is quite steep up and down so might not be so good for buggies and small kids with little legs, but ideal for a family photography session with older kids.
6. Bushey Park
Bushey Park is one of my go-to locations for family photoshoots. With its wide-open spaces, beautiful tree-lined avenues, and roaming deer, it offers a wonderfully natural and slightly wild feel. The long grass in summer and golden tones in autumn create a soft, dreamy backdrop, while the sheer size of the park means we can always find a quiet spot for relaxed, uninterrupted moments
7. Kew Gardens
Kew Gardens is perfect for families who love a relaxed botanical setting. The variety here is incredible, from colourful flower beds and elegant glasshouses to peaceful woodland areas. It’s an especially lovely choice if you’re after a seasonal feel, with something beautiful in bloom all year round. It also works wonderfully for younger children, with lots of interesting spaces to explore. And with cafe’s and facilities, along with seasonal events its a wonderful place for a photoshoot and a day out after.
8. Richmond Park
Richmond Park is a firm favourite for those seeking a natural, countryside feel within easy reach of central London. Known for its ancient trees, sweeping landscapes, and herds of deer, it creates a truly magical setting for family photos. The light here is particularly beautiful in the early morning or at golden hour. With trees to climb, ponds to discover and pathways to explore it’s ideal for relaxed, playful sessions where children can run, explore, and simply be themselves.
