I am so happy photographing families, whether it’s mum with a bump, or dad and the little ones, or a fun outdoor family photography session. I’m a big fan of getting out in nature, where kids can run about and just be kids. As I’m based in South London I thought it was high time I share my 9 favourite locations for outdoor South London family photography.

Outdoor South London family photography locations

#1 Bushy Park

Bushy Park is a Royal Park in Teddington near Richmond in south west London. There are herds of deer, plenty of woodlands and tons of history too. Henry VIII lived next door at Hampton Court Palace! If you’re a history buff, the Diana Fountain is the park’s most famous landmark designed by Sir Christopher Wren. It’s all very easy to get around for little ones, and the lake and meadows make for beautiful photos. Plus, it’s free to visit. Key point – there’s a cafe for much-needed snacks!

Check out my Bushy Park family shoot in the autumn here – a lovely way to spend a day than capturing an Autumn Bushey Park family photoshoot. I have known Annabelle and Matt for a few years as I photographed their wedding in 2012. When their older daughter was born we did a family shoot in Bushey Park, so when they welcomed their second little girl into the family it was wonderful to be able to do another Bushey Park family photoshoot for them. Autumn is a great time of the year for family photos, not only is Autumn gorgeous with the changing colours of nature and beautiful light but its a lot of fun for kids with fallen leaves and conkers to collect.

#2 Richmond Park

Richmond Park is a Royal Park in south west London and ideal for family photography. For little ones, there are two playgrounds and you can rent bikes for older kids or even ride horses.

There are over 750 deer still living here dating back to Charles I, and there are beautiful ancient trees that the King himself would have ridden past and lots of bugs and wildlife to seek out. I love the views from Henry’s Mound where you can even see St Paul’s Cathedral, making it a gorgeous South London family photography hotspot. Plus, it’s free to visit!

Recently, I had the best time joining Eliza, Tom and their kids for a walk in the park and to capture their Richmond Park family photoshoot. I had photographed Eliza & Tom’s wedding at Pembroke Lodge in Richmond Park a few years ago and we met up again for a family shoot when their eldest was a toddler.

Now they had a new addition to the family to wanted to get some updated photos of their family of four. We had a perfect day for their Richmond Park family photoshoot and enjoyed a relaxed walk in the park with lots of time for climbing trees, exploring and bug hunting.

As with all family photoshoots, the little ones lead the way! With a little guidance here and plenty of cuddles, giggles and being silly. This is the perfect chance to have fun and spend time together.

#3 Kew Gardens

Kew Gardens is world famous for its botanical gardens, 500 acres of woodlands and it’s major conservation projects. There is loads for the kids to do, including a dedicated Children’s Garden specifically designed for children from 2 to 12 years old. There is loads to explore in Kew Gardens, I always discover something new whenever I visit and I think that photographing your family there would be such a lovely day out. Certainly, never one to forget!

There is a small fee to get into the gardens, but this gives you access for the whole day so you can enjoy a day out after the shoot.

#4 Horniman Gardens

We’re moving over to south east London now, and the gorgeous Horniman Gardens in Forest Hill. With a fun museum attached it’s well worth a visit as there are always loads on for kids. I spent many an hour in the museum and aquarium at The Horniman when my son was little!

The gardens are lovely and relaxing, you’d never think you were just off the South Circular at all! There’s a sound garden to play giant musical instruments, a bee garden where you can spot bee hotels, and plants for their food, and a wildlife garden which is perfect for spotting wildlife. The historic bandstand makes for a beautiful backdrop for family photos, but also just letting the kids play and explore makes a lovely day out too. Plus, it’s free to visit.

#5 Crystal Palace Park

Crystal Palace Park is also in south east London and is a gorgeous green park based on one of the steepest hills in London so there are lots of views to enjoy, along with the most fun feature – the first ever dinosaur statues in the world (probably!) Look out for Guy the Gorilla too. There are pedalos which would be fun, and a family-friendly cafe along with ice cream vans for important snack stops.

#6 Greenwich Park

Greenwich Park is famous for its observatory and the home of Greenwich Prime Meridian, but it’s also a perfect outdoor south London family photography location. You can stand on the hill and see how many landmarks in London you can spot. The kids can run around and hop between the Eastern and Western hemispheres! The park is also steeped in history – there are remains of a Roman temple, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and of course the Planetarium to visit. I recommend making a day of it, and popping down to the Cutty Sark whilst we’re there too. It’s free to visit, but the Planetarium is ticketed.

Take a look at Romina & Carl’s family shoot in Greenwich Park. Romina got in touch when she was expecting her baby so their shoot was a mix of a maternity and a family shoot. It was really important to her that she got photos before the baby was born, with Carl and their little boy. They live near Greenwich Park and it’s somewhere they visit a lot, so was a perfect location for photos.

#7 Dulwich Park

Dulwich Park is my old stomping ground. I used to live round the corner in West Norwood and when my son was small we spent many, many (many!) hours exploring Dulwich Park.

Created in 1890, Dulwich Park began its life as farmland and a group of meadows known as “five fields”. Many of the ancient boundary oaks survive today. There are multiple gardens, a favourite is the American Garden which is famous for its rhododendrons, which are spectacular when they’re in bloom in May. There is also a small lake with boats you can hire, a cafe, a playground and lots of pathways throughout for scooter or bike riding.

#8 Brockwell Park

Brockwell Park is a large park set on a hill within the Herne Hill area and includes a network of ponds, trees, a walled ‘Old English’ flower garden and wide, open meadows.

Originally the residence of John Blades, a famous London glass merchant, it was acquired by the Metropolitan Board of Works in the late 19th Century. It was then laid out as a landscaped park, and formally opened to the general public in 1892. Within the park are a number of historic buildings including Brockwell Lido and Brockwell Hall, which has a cafe on the ground floor.

The walled garden in Brockwell Park is a fave spot for photos.

Finally, outdoor South London family photography location #9 Coombe Wood Gardens

Coombe Wood Gardens is very near me near Croydon so just makes it onto the outdoor South London family photography location list! It’s a beautiful ornamental garden with a pathway taking you through to enjoy each space filled with plants and trees. Plus there’s a little cafe for snacks!
